Plan a pilot review ↗

FROM QUESTION TO WORKING PILOT

A clear decision at every stage.

  1. Define the taskAgree users, data sources, boundaries and what success means.
  2. Build & evaluateTest a limited pilot against real questions and approved sample data.
  3. Decide & hand overReview results, costs and risks. Agree the next step and operating responsibilities.

Your data. Clear permissions. Human accountability.

Agree model providers, data residency, retention and access before connecting information. Design production changes and external actions to require authorized approval. Evaluate retrieved content and model responses, with a fallback when the system cannot answer reliably.

Do we need to replace our databases or build a model from scratch?

Begin with your existing environment and the task to solve. An assessment can compare managed models, retrieval over approved data and available database capabilities. A new platform or custom model is considered only when the requirements justify it.

Delivery scope, supported platforms, provider charges and ongoing support are agreed for each engagement. Cloud and model usage costs are assessed separately.

Contingency DBA services

A second senior DBA.
When your business needs one.

Another full-time senior DBA may be difficult to justify. Yet vacations, unexpected absences and complex projects still call for experienced backup. CTRD provides a secondary resource who becomes familiar with your environment, supports your primary DBA and adds capacity when needed.

VALUE BETWEEN COVERAGE PERIODS

Keep improvement work moving

Use agreed consulting time to advance work that daily operations can push aside.

  • Runbooks, procedures and knowledge transfer
  • Health reporting and alert reviews
  • Backup audits and scheduled restore testing
  • Performance tuning and maintenance preparation

PLANNED & PRACTICAL

Ready through onboarding

Establish environment knowledge before coverage is needed, with clear responsibilities and a documented handover.

  • Review systems, dependencies and priorities
  • Agree secure access and operating procedures
  • Define coverage windows and escalation paths
  • Schedule familiarization and ongoing updates
Discuss contingency DBA coverage ↗Expertise where you need it. When you need it.

Availability, notice periods, coverage and response expectations are agreed in advance. Onboarding supports continuity; it does not imply automatic 24/7 or immediate emergency availability.

HOW WE WORK

Understand the environment.
Leave the team stronger.

Work directly with a senior consultant. We agree the scope, establish a factual baseline and document decisions so your team can operate with confidence.

  1. 01 / DISCOVER

    Start with what matters.

Understand business priorities, dependencies, recovery needs and the capacity of your existing team.

  2. 02 / PLAN

    Agree a practical path.

Define responsibilities, deliverables, access, risks and how the work will be validated.

  3. 03 / DELIVER

    Test. Document. Transfer.

Implement agreed changes, verify results and leave clear procedures and a maintainable handover.

BUSINESS-CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTS

Context matters

PERSPECTIVES / PRACTICAL GUIDES

Better questions.
Better database decisions.

Short guides for IT leaders planning coverage, recovery and technology change. General guidance, with the details shaped around your environment.

TEAM RESILIENCE / 3 QUESTIONS

Who covers your database when your DBA is away?

Continuity starts before an absence. Access, context and decision-making authority need preparation.

Read the guide
  1. Can a secondary resource securely access the environment and find current operating procedures?
  2. Are backup checks, scheduled work and incident escalation clearly assigned?
  3. Has a handover been rehearsed, with agreed availability and approval boundaries?

Start with familiarization, a current runbook and planned coverage windows. Use work between coverage periods to keep environment knowledge current.

RECOVERY / READINESS

When was your last successful restore test?

A completed backup job is useful evidence. A validated restore answers a different business question.

Read the guide

Agree what must be recovered and the acceptable interruption. Test a restore in an isolated environment, record elapsed time, validate the recovered database and check application dependencies.

Document gaps, assign owners and repeat tests on a schedule appropriate to the system. A successful test supports readiness; it is not a guarantee for every incident.

MODERNIZATION / PLANNING

Before moving the database, map the dependencies.

A platform decision needs more than an engine name and a storage estimate.

Read the guide

Inventory application connections, jobs, integrations, code, permissions and recovery requirements. Check compatibility and tooling before setting a cutover plan.

Rehearse migration and reconciliation, validate application behavior and define rollback decision points. Treat an online timeline estimate as a discovery aid, not a delivery commitment.

PLANNING WORKBENCH

Turn a technical question
into a useful conversation.

Explore an initial migration allowance, then carry your selections into the inquiry form. The estimate is illustrative and needs a scoped review.

    TECHNICAL RESOURCES

    Practical questions.
    Useful starting points.

Transparent diagnostic approaches and a small read-only inventory query. These are general references, not published client post-mortems or measured benchmarks.

    REPLICATION / INVESTIGATION CHECKLIST

When replication lag rises, where do you start?

Separate source capture, transport and target apply. Track the backlog over time, then correlate it with workload changes and resource pressure.

    Inspect the investigation sequence
    • Establish when lag started and what changed.
    • Check capture progress, trail growth and process errors.
    • Review DNS, connectivity and transport behavior.
    • Inspect target apply throughput and warehouse contention.
    • Validate data consistency before declaring recovery.

Metrics to collect: capture lag, apply lag, backlog growth and target throughput. No benchmark is assumed.

    SQL SERVER / READ-ONLY INVENTORY
